![]() ![]() Gaudily colored species like angelfish, snappers, burrfish, moonfish and sergeant majors have found hospitable, if temporary, conditions in the Sound. Some of these wayward fish come from waters around the Caribbean and Bahamas. While that blue runner might not have been so unusual, since mid-July, Long Island Sound anglers have been catching tropical reef fish while they pursue the more common Sound species like porgies, fluke, bluefish and stripers. The following are fishing methods used to catch. Bluefish does not keep well if frozen, and the flesh tends to become soft if not eaten soon after capture. ![]() Live baits are preferred, but plugs, lures or feathers are also used. The Nutmeg TU board presented Merly, who also happens to hold the state record for sea-run brown trout (10 pounds, 8 ounces) with an engraved fly box. Fishing methods include trolling, chumming, casting, jigging, and live and dead bait fishing from boats, shores or piers. In a recent letter to the Department of Energy and Environment, Merly urged extending the Mill River Wild Trout Management Area (WTMA) in Easton and Fairfield all the way to Lake Mohegan, because wild trout that migrate to the lake seeking a thermal refuge in the summer are being caught in non-WTMA areas of the river such as the Cascades as they move back up stream to spawn. During his term, Merly pushed many invaluable TU programs, including stream improvement and thermal refuge projects as well as Trout in the Classroom. MERLY SERVED US WELL: A tip of the Houseyman hat to Ron Merly, who is ending his three years as president of the Nutmeg Chapter of Trout Unlimited. ![]()
